Controller Area Network for Vehicle Applications Training from DG Technologies’ Mark Zachos
DG Technologies president and industry expert Mark Zachos was at the SAE World Automotive Headquarters in Troy, Michigan, last week teaching Controller Area Network (CAN) for Vehicle Applications.
Approved for use as an International Standards Organization (ISO) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) diagnostic network, the Controller Area Network has become the standard of choice for most automotive manufacturers, and its usage continues to grow.
Geared toward validation engineers, test engineers, embedded programmers and those working with applications using CAN, Zachos’s course covers the theory and use of the CAN protocol and its applications in the automotive industry. Zachos uses DG Technologies’ CyberTech Truck in a Box training tool kit, which contains diagnostic and simulator tools – including DG’s trusted DPA XL CAN tool – gages, cables, modules and more, to demonstrate CAN network hackings.

This fall, DG president and founder Mark Zachos will teach Heavy-Duty Protocol Training.
In the course, Zachos will dive into the fundamentals required for developing heavy-duty vehicle communications protocols. With cybersecurity at the forefront of everything DG Technologies does, as well as a part of every DG diagnostic tool, Zachos incorporates it specifically into this class.
Zachos has more than 30 years of engineering experience in automotive electronics, cybersecurity, vehicle diagnostics and communications. He has authored technical papers on On-Board Diagnostics (OBD) and in-vehicle networking and holds more than 10 patents in vehicle communications technology. He heads several advisory groups and standards teams within the Society of Engineers and the American Trucking Association, and sits on the Oakland County (MI) Connected Vehicle Task Force, where his focus is secure connected vehicle deployment. He has been directly involved with the development of more than 25 light and heavy-duty vehicle technical standards.
A well-known instructor, Zachos teaches embedded programming, CANbus and vehicle cybersecurity at The University of Michigan-Dearborn and instructs hackers at the U.S. Army TARDEC CyberTruck Challenge. DG Technologies also offers classes in Introduction to Car Hacking with CANbus, Automotive Ethernet Basics, Diagnostics CAN-Basic OBD, and CAN and Higher Layer Protocols.
Classes are taught in Metro Detroit, and can be customized to be offered elsewhere on location.

DG Technologies was in Chicago last week as part of the Society of Automotive Engineers’ (SAE) annual COMVEC forum to exchange ideas with fellow industry experts about the latest in critical topics like electrification, ADAS development, propulsion advancements, emissions reduction efforts and digital and software innovation, and about how DG’s products and the DPA Health application in particular fit in to the commercial vehicle industry as it moves into the future.
This year’s SAE COMVEC, held Sept. 19-21, had 840 people in attendance including 200 high school students from the Chicago area.
With its 35-year-history as an industry leader in secure commercial vehicle diagnostics, DG Technologies looks forward to COMVEC each year to gather with other professionals from OEMs, suppliers, government and academia to connect and share the most recent innovations and technologies in their work to prepare for the future of the industry.
Mark Pope, DG Technologies’ Product Specialist and Education Coordinator, organized and moderated the forum’s panel discussion on Reliability, Diagnostics and Prognostics for Critical Vehicle Electronic Systems. Panelists were Andreas Hege of RA Consulting and Steven Holland of VHM Innovations.
DG partners with RA Consulting to sell Silver Scan-Tool software, and with Softing Automotive, experts in UDS development tools and the TestCUBE2, a configurable hardware solution for simulating ECU diagnostics with real bus communication.
“On-board diagnostics have been around for a long time and are well understood and standardized,” Pope explained in his description of the panel discussion. “Huge amounts of diagnostic data have piled up over the years. Many variants and dimensions must be supported. Fortunately, the data are machine readable.”
The presentation offered an overview of the evolution of big data techniques to promote prognostic development and provided case studies for the next generation of prognostics development.
“Our DPA Health application directly relates to this program,” Pope said. DPA Health is DG Technologies’ cloud-based fleet management software for truck electrical systems. The application offers technicians “the capability to look at various vehicle electrical components and replace them before a possible breakdown of the part and possible breakdown of the vehicle,” he said.
A PC software application that runs on a laptop, DPA Health communicates to the truck through a DG Technologies DPA XL diagnostics and reprogramming VDA and securely extracts data from the vehicle network, giving fleet managers and owners an overall view of the health of their vehicles’ electrical systems components.

DG Technologies at the 2023 On-Board Diagnostics Symposium
DG Technologies was excited to take part last week in the Society of Automotive Engineers 2023 On-Board Diagnostics Symposium-Americas in Indianapolis and exchange ideas with other industry leaders on the latest emission rules and technologies in vehicle diagnostics.

Billed by SAE as “the industry’s relied upon resource – providing access to technology, standards and regulatory information for automotive engineering geared at meeting CARB, EPA and European Commission ground vehicle emissions regulations,” the annual symposium brings together leaders in powertrain diagnostics from the light- and heavy-duty automotive industry and the commercial vehicle on- and off-road industry to discuss relevant and timely technical topics that directly influence ground vehicle emissions reduction efforts.
“It’s one of the premier SAE events that our business goes to,” said Mark Zachos, founder of the Dearborn Group and president of DG Technologies, who represented the company at the symposium. Personally, Zachos also works on OBD technology in the SAE committees he sits on. “The opportunity to learn from the industry’s experts face-to-face and in person is second to none.”
This year’s symposium addressed updates on current and proposed rulemaking from regulatory entities from around the world, strategies being employed to ensure powertrains meet current and upcoming global regulations in North America, Europe and China, the most up-to-date global standards development initiatives, the latest on diagnostic challenges and solutions relating to zero-emission vehicles, upcoming industry trends, information on OBD systems development and SAE standards associated with light-and heavy-duty emissions controls.

A particular challenge generating discussion this year, Zachos said, was how the industry should be working to transfer the State of California’s new OBD emissions regulations for gas-powered engines to electric vehicles, for which there currently is no universal mandate.
“SAE has been a great experience,” said Mark Laleman, DG Technologies’ OBD regulations and diagnostics standards technical expert. “Our work on the diagnostic committees is rewarding and also provides us the opportunity to help structure the future of diagnostic communication.” Although not in attendance with Zachos this year, Laleman has long been involved with organizing the event and for the last two decades has also served on the SAE diagnostic committees.
Laleman said participating in the OBD symposium is beneficial to the company for many reasons, including networking with fellow industry experts to exchange ideas about the latest regulations and making contacts with OEMs and suppliers who use DG’s products or may be interested in trying them. It also gives the company the opportunity to interact with government regulators and provide DG Technologies’ experience on diagnostic communication capabilities.
For Zachos’s part, he serves as chairman of several technical standards teams including the American Trucking Association TMC Fleet Maintenance Cybersecurity Task Force, the SAE J1939 Network Security Task Force, the SAE J3005 (OBD dongle security) and the SAE Data Link Connector Security Committee. He also sits on the Oakland County Connected Vehicle Task Force on secure connected vehicle deployment, has authored numerous technical papers on on-board diagnostics and in-vehicle networking and holds patents on vehicle communications technology.
“Mark has a passion for volunteering and participating and that shapes the culture of DG,” said John McNelis, DG Technologies sales and marketing manager. He noted that the committee and task force positions that Zachos, Laleman and others in the company hold with SAE and other industry organizations are voluntary. “It’s something our company feels strongly about.”
